SBOE Reviews Public Input on K-5 Instructional Materials Ahead of Board Action

IMRA Reports Highlight Revisions Made Based on Review Process

AUSTIN, Texas – September 20, 2024 – The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) is currently reviewing feedback from the regularly scheduled meeting held September 10 – 13 regarding instructional materials submitted for adoption under Instructional Materials Review and Approval (IMRA) Cycle 2024.

During the meeting, the board heard over 8 hours of public testimony on K-5 mathematics and English and Spanish language arts & reading instructional materials under the direction of House Bill (HB) 1605 (88R). This feedback will help guide the board and publishers to make any revisions to ensure materials are factually accurate, free from bias, align with Texas standards and provide students with the highest quality education.

As part of the IMRA process and at the request of the SBOE, IMRA reports were made available to the public. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) published comprehensive reports that provide a transparent overview of the review process and are available for each product.

Key reports include:

  • State Review Panelist (SRP) Feedback Report: Contains feedback, suggestions and identified content errors from state review panelists, as well as any suitability flags for prohibited content, along with publishers' responses.
  • Public Feedback Report: Lists public comments, reported errors and suitability flags for prohibited content, along with the publishers' responses.
  • Publisher-Identified Changes, Corrections and New Content Report: Contains new content, error corrections and editorial changes submitted by publishers during the review process.

The SBOE will consider the feedback, reports, and data collected during the review process to inform decisions pending adoption, set for the November scheduled meeting.

In other action, the board discussed the schedule for future IMRA cycles and the development of draft rubrics for the 2025 cycle.

Recognition

The board celebrated 30 years of honoring exceptional volunteers with the 2024 Heroes for Children award. This inspiring group of Texans have engaged in various acts of service from leading parent-teacher organizations and advocating for educational improvements, to promoting literacy and mentoring students on post-graduation goals. The board approved a resolution in their honor.

The SBOE will reconvene the week of November 19, 2024.
