SBOE Member District 1

Board Term: Jan. 1, 2025 - Jan. 1, 2029

Gustavo Reveles was elected to serve on the State Board of Education in November 2024 to represent District 1. The District includes counties in south-west Texas and most of the Texas-Mexico Border.

A proud fronterizo, Gustavo was born in El Paso and grew up on both sides of the Texas-Chihuahua border. He is a product of the public school system, where he was coded as an English Language Learner (LEP) or Emergent Bilingual (EB) student. He graduated from Riverside High School in the Ysleta Independent School District and then attended the University of Texas at El Paso where he earned a BA in Journalism with a concentration in Chicano Studies.

The transformative power of education was always a part of the Reveles Household.  Gustavo’s father is a retired public educator who worked in Mexico along with two of his brothers. His sister is currently a school administrator in San Antonio.

Gustavo worked for 15 years in journalism at both the El Paso Times and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, spending most of his tenure covering Texas public education and pedagogy issues. He also covered municipal government and growth and transportation. His coverage helped improve public-education policies and practices following investigations into improper entitlement spending, testing irregularities and governance violations. His work in explanatory journalism centered on the impact of bilingual-education policies on students and their families. Gustavo earned awards from the Texas and New Mexico Associated Press managing editors associations.

After journalism, Gustavo joined the Texas public education system as a communications and public relations officer. He has worked at the Canutillo and El Paso independent school districts. He currently serves as the Director of Communications for Canutillo ISD. During his tenure as a school public relations officer, he led efforts to pass more than $1 billion in voter-approved bond referendums, as well as three tax ratification elections. Gustavo’s efforts to showcase  student and teacher success has earned him awards from the Texas School Public Relations Association and the National School Public Relations Association.

Gustavo is committed to providing access to high-quality public education to all Texas students regardless of their background, identity, beliefs or geographic location.

He is also committed to improving his community and profession. Gustavo has served in several local, state and national boards including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Texas School Public Relations Association, the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence of El Paso, the UTEP Alumni Association, El Pasoans for Equality, the El Paso Press Club, the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, Leadership El Paso and Junior Leadership El Paso. For the City of El Paso, he has served on the City Plan Commission, the Ad Hoc City Charter Advisory Committee, the Bond Oversight Advisory Council, the Uptown Parking Advisory Council, the Public Arts Committee and the Mexican-American Cultural Center Subcommittee. Gustavo is a member of UNITY: Journalists of Color, Investigative Reporters and Editors, the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, the National School Boards Association, the Texas School Boards Association, the Texas Association of School Administrators and Public Relations of the Southwest.

Gustavo and his fiancé, Josué, live in the foothills of El Paso’s Franklin Mountains overlooking the Rio Grande. They share their home with their three dogs: a boxer named Holly and two Boston terriers named Burger and Slider. For 10 years, Gustavo has served as a billet host to hockey players from throughout the world who come to Texas to play for the El Paso Rhinos of the North American Hockey League.
